Anxiety

When your mind won't slow down.

Overthinking at 2am. A chest that tightens before every meeting. Avoiding calls, plans and emails because they feel like too much. Anxiety is the most common reason people come to us, and it's very workable.

What anxiety can feel like

Racing thoughts

Worst-case scenarios on loop, replaying conversations, and not being able to switch off at night.

In your body

A fast heartbeat, a knotted stomach, tight shoulders, shallow breathing, trouble sleeping.

Avoidance

Putting things off, cancelling plans and dodging calls, which brings relief now and more worry later.

Panic

Sudden waves of fear that feel physical, sometimes like something is seriously wrong.

How counselling helps

First we get to know your anxiety: what sets it off, what keeps it going, and what it's trying to protect you from. Then we work on it together.

That can mean practical tools, like grounding, breathing and catching anxious thoughts (the core of CBT, cognitive behavioural therapy). It can also mean slower work on where the worry comes from. We'll find the mix that suits you.

What your first session is like

Fifty minutes on video. Your therapist will ask what's been happening, how long it's been going on and what you'd like to change. You don't need to prepare or know the right words. "I've been anxious and I don't know why" is a perfectly good start.

When it's more urgent

If you've never had a panic attack before, or you have chest pain, see a doctor first to rule out anything physical.

If you're thinking about harming yourself, please don't wait for a session. Call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24×7) or see our emergency helplines.

Questions people ask

Do you diagnose anxiety disorders?

No. We don't give diagnoses or prescribe medication. If a diagnosis or medication could help, we'll help you find a psychiatrist.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what's going on. Many people notice a difference within a few sessions. We'll check in on progress together regularly.

Can therapy help if I'm already on medication?

Yes. Therapy and medication often work well together. Keep your psychiatrist in the loop.

What if I panic during a session?

That's okay. Your therapist will help you through it. It can even be a useful moment to practise what helps.
